A man wanted by law enforcement for multiple outstanding felony arrest warrants has been apprehended near Penrose Colorado.

The arrest of Richard Capek, 35 announced Wednesday by the United States Marshals Service, occurred after a short standoff at a rural residence near Highway 50 and R Street east of Penrose, in Teller County.

The arrest was conducted by the U.S. Marshals tactical team.

The U.S. Marshal’s news release states that Capek had been sought by the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office on suspicion of several crimes, including a residential burglary on July 11 in Rockvale, Colo. (four miles west of Florence) where multiple firearms were believed to have been stolen.

The stolen weapons included one AK-47 style rifle, three AR-15 style rifles, three shotguns and two handguns.

The sheriff’s office sought assistance from the U.S. Marshals’ Colorado Violent Offender Task Force to apprehend Capek beginning on July 5. According to the news release, detectives conducted several days of surveillance to find Capek, and tail him back to the residence where he was hiding

Officials say Capek initially refused to leave the residence, but eventually did exit the home and surrender to law enforcement.

Capek was initially sought on felony warrants for  2nd degree assault via strangulation, violation of a protection order, 3rd degree assault and domestic violence. Officials say he now faces additional charges of suspected felony burglary, felony theft, felony motor vehicle theft, attempted vehicular assault and more, stemming from the June 11 incident. He was booked into the Fremont County Jail.

“This case presented some unique challenges,” said Kirk Taylor with the U.S. Marshal for the District of Colorado, “but combining the vast array of both local and federal resources, we were able to safely apprehend Mr. Capek and bring him in for his day in court.”

This is not Capek’s first brush with the law. He was arrested in Cañon City in July of 2023 for outstanding warrants from El Paso County on suspicion of assault, domestic violence and child abuse charges. It was not immediately clear what the outcome of those charges were.
