Texas electronics and furniture retailer will close its doors in Colorado Springs

Conn’s HomePlus, the Texas-based electronics and furniture retailer, will close its Colorado Springs store and five others in Colorado after the chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week.

The locations in Colorado are among 73 of 170 Conn’s stores nationwide that will shut their doors, according to reports by CNN and other national news outlets.

Customers who called the Colorado Springs store, at 345 N. Academy Blvd. and southeast of Academy and Platte Avenue, were being told Wednesday that the location likely will close by October.

Other Colorado stores to close are in Arvada, Aurora, Denver, Englewood and Fort Collins, the Conn’s website showed. A Conn’s distribution center in Aurora wasn’t included on the list of locations to close.

Conn’s sells kitchen appliances, washers and dryers, televisions, computers and computer accessories and living room, dining room and bedroom furniture, including mattresses. It expanded to Colorado Springs in 2014, taking over a nearly 43,000-square-foot building that formerly housed a Circuit City electronics store.

At the time, the chain told The Gazette that it specialized in a variety of customer financing plans and targeted consumers who lack top credit.

CNN reported that Conn’s “has been struggling with slumping sales amid a broader slowdown in discretionary spending among consumers.” The retailer has assets and liabilities of at least $1 billion each, according to its bankruptcy filing, CNN said.

In general, Conn’s and other brick-and-mortar retailers have battled changing consumer buying habits for years. Some shoppers will peruse items at brick-and-mortar stores, only to then purchase them online at lower prices and sometimes with free delivery.

At the same time, Conn’s competes with stores such as Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, as well as Amazon and other online rivals.
