Hammer-wielding burglary suspect shot by security guard in west Colorado Springs
A hammer-wielding burglary suspect attacked one security guard before being shot by another at a business in west Colorado Springs early Sunday, according to law enforcement officials.
The suspect, Travis Crane, was hospitalized but is expected to survive his injuries, police said.
Just before 4 a.m. on Sunday, officers responded to a call about a shooting in the 300 block of West Bijou Street. When they arrived and conducted an initial investigation, they learned that a male suspect had broken into multiple businesses before being confronted by a security guard. The suspect allegedly attacked the guard with a hammer, police said.
A second security guard confronted the man, who still held the hammer. When the suspect continued to advance, the guard shot Crane, according to a CSPD blotter entry. Officials did not say how many rounds the guard fired or how many times Crane was hit.
The injured guard was treated at a hospital and is expected to recover. The guard who fired his gun was not injured.
After Crane is treated for his injuries, he will be booked into El Paso County Jail, police said.
