New burger and chicken chain expanding to Colorado Springs combines both concepts under one roof

Colorado Springs has seen its share of national and regional burger and chicken chains expand to town in recent years.

Now, the latest arrival combines both concepts under one roof.

Georgia-based WNB Factory — the acronym stands for wings n’ burgers — is targeting a mid-August soft opening and a grand opening a month later at 5620 E. Woodmen Road. The restaurant will occupy 1,800 square feet in a multitenant retail building in the Walmart- and Home Depot-anchored Powers Peak shopping center, northwest of Powers Boulevard and Woodmen.

The restaurant will be WNB Factory’s first in Colorado and the farthest west for the chain, which was launched in 1997 and has 86, mostly franchised locations, said Robert Bales, vice president and chief operating officer for PK Restaurant Group, which owns and franchises the WNB Factory brand. PK Restaurant Group hopes to have more than 90 locations open by the end of this month.

Father-and-son franchisees Sal and Joseph Lopez, who had sought to open a WNB Factory location in Georgia, instead decided they wanted to move to Colorado, Bales said.

PK Restaurant Group allowed them to bring the WNB Factory brand to Colorado Springs with the stipulation that it be locally owned and operated, he said. Joseph Lopez, Bales said, will run the Springs restaurant.

At the same time, Colorado’s growth was attractive to WNB Factory, Bales said.

“Colorado is expanding rapidly,” he said. “There seems to be a lot of attention generated in the market … with In-N-Out, Whataburger, all the other brands and chains that are now coming.”

WNB Factory’s concept is to offer higher quality food, yet not necessarily at high end prices, Bales said.

Hamburgers, for example, are made to order with only fresh, certified angus beef, “which is heads and tails above every other brand that’s out there, with the exception of Shake Shack,” he said. “Shake Shack is very similar to us in quality of beef. The rest of the guys fall way short.”

Hamburgers are served on brioche, butter-style buns, and the menu includes a variety of burgers, Bales said. Customers also can order their burgers any way they want, including choosing the number of patties, types of sauces and the like.

On the chicken side of the menu, WNB Factory serves wings and tenders, and uses medium-sized, all-natural chickens that are free of hormones and antibiotics, which ensures better textured and tasting food, Bales said.

Other menu items include cheesesteaks, chicken sandwiches, salads, several varieties of fries, onion rings, milk shakes and smoothies.

Its higher food quality, Bales said, puts WNB Factory in a position to better compete with the dozens of chains already in Colorado Springs or that have expanded to the market. Those names include Shake Shack, In-N-Out Burger, Whataburger, Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers and Slim Chickens.

“We start off with premium ingredients, we are priced very competitive to all of the brands, even with premium ingredients,” Bales said. “We are not charging dine-in prices like a steakhouse restaurant, where you go get a burger for $16.99 or $20. Our burgers are going to start in the $6 range (and) go up to about $15.99 for our highest priced burger. So, we are priced very competitive.

“Our food is also very clean from an ingredient standpoint,” Bales added. “We don’t use extra ingredients. We don’t use fillers, we don’t use MSG, we don’t use anything like that. … Kosher salt and pepper is all we use for seasoning all of our food. Very clean. We let the food shine for what it is.”

WNB Factory will offer dine-in service with about 20 seats, as well as carryout and delivery service, Bales said.

The Lopezes, as franchisees, are expected to add additional WNB Factory locations in Colorado Springs, Denver and elsewhere in the state, Bales said. They couldn’t be reached for comment.
