Two people are dead, including a 12-year-old girl, and two were hospitalized after a head-on collision Wednesday on U.S. 24, according to Colorado State Patrol.

The crash took place about 10:20 p.m. near Judge Orr and Stapleton roads in Falcon, officials said.

Investigators determined that a Chevrolet Silverado, driving west on U.S. 24, swerved onto the right shoulder and, while attempting to correct its course, drifted into the eastbound lane and collided with a Jeep Wrangler, said state trooper Gabriel Moltrer.

A 41-year-old man and a 12-year-old girl, both occupants of the Jeep, were killed at the scene. A 9-year-old boy survived but suffered serious injuries, Moltrer said. A 46-year-old man, the sole occupant of the Chevrolet, also suffered serious bodily injury. Both survivors were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions have not been released.

State Patrol has not yet released the relationship between the deceased driver and the two children in the Jeep but confirmed that they were from Peyton, as was the driver of the Silverado.

All four people had been wearing seat belts, according to Moltrer.

Alcohol and excessive speed are believed to have contributed to the crash. No arrests were announced.
