Child shot in Pueblo over stolen bicycle on Sunday, SWAT team called

A child suffered a gunshot wound on Sunday after a dispute over a reportedly stolen bicycle escalated to gunfire, according to the Pueblo Police Department.

The incident took place just after 10 a.m., Sunday, in the 1700 block of Constitution Road in east Pueblo after a man and his child went looking for the child’s stolen bike, officials said.

When they found the bicycle outside a residence, the father confronted the home’s occupants about it. At that point, someone inside the home fired at least one round from a gun, striking the child, according to police.

“Thankfully, the bullet decelerated enough to cause only minor injuries,” officials said in a news release. “In an abundance of caution, the child was transported to a local area hospital for treatment and will be released.”

A SWAT team was deployed to the house to deal with a barricaded suspect, but details about the standoff were unavailable. No arrests had been announced as of Monday morning.
