Arrest made in fatal December hit-and-run that killed 84-year-old Colorado Springs woman
The Colorado Springs Police Department has made an arrest in a fatal hit-and-run that occurred last December in southeast Colorado Springs.
On the afternoon of Dec. 8, police responded to a traffic crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of Airport and Chelton roads. Officers had the pedestrian — later identified as 84-year-old Dolores Holler — transported to a local hospital, where she was later declared dead due to her injuries.
The police department’s Major Crash Team investigated the accident. Officers determined that Holler was crossing Airport Road from the south to the north, but may not have been in the crosswalk at the time of the crash. The vehicle was traveling west on Airport Road.
Following the crash, the driver who struck Holler fled the scene, continuing west on Airport Road.
On June 12, the Major Crash Team contacted and arrested 48-year-old Alejandro Balderas-Avilez on suspicion of being the hit-and-run driver. He has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death and was booked into the El Paso County Jail.
