Two motorists are dead and a third was arrested following a three-vehicle crash in southeast Colorado Springs, according to law enforcement officials.

The deadly incident took place at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday at South Powers and East Fountain boulevards, officials said.

Responding officers found two people dead at the scene.

A third person was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The intersection was closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene.

An investigation determined that two vehicles on eastbound Fountain Boulevard were turning onto northbound Powers when a vehicle, driving south on Powers, crashed into both cars.

Police have arrested Shawn Michael Johnson, 39, in connection with the incident. Alcohol and excessive speed are believed to have been factors in the crash.
