Final arrest made in brutal Colorado Springs attempted murder

Trial dates set for Colorado Springs man accused of violent crimes, attempted homicide

The Colorado Springs Police Department has made a fourth arrest in the brutal assault and attempted murder of a Colorado Springs man.

On Jan. 22 of this year a 22-year-old man was found unconscious in the middle of the ice under the “PopCycle” bridge at the intersection of West Van Buren Street and Beacon Street.

Rescue personnel report the man was only wearing a pair of red sweat pants, with clear signs of being burned. The man was brought to Penrose Hospital. He later told investigators that he had been beaten, cut with a box cutter blade, hit with a metal pipe and set on fire. The victim said he remembered being threatened at gunpoint to jump off the bridge, but not the actual fall.

Detectives estimate the victim lay below the bridge for about seven hours before being found.

The man identified four individuals as his assailants: Jonathan Foilx, Alyssa Briggs, Elijah Cunningham and Shemor Mitchell.

According to court documents, the assault was over a missing $10 and a computer tablet.

El Paso County records indicate all four are in custody at the county jail as of Wednesday afternoon, on more than $500,000 bond.

Foix and Cunningham were reported arrested in February. Briggs was last arrested on April 2. Mitchell escaped arrest until June 6.

All four now face attempted murder and assault charges.

Mitchell’s other allegations

Based on court documents, the latest arrested suspect Mitchell has at least three additional cases pending in the 4th Judicial District.

Arrest affidavits allege that Mitchell also assaulted a young man after “taking over” his apartment in March, just two months after the bridge assault, with several of his friends.

After being invited to stay at the apartment, the young man said he returned home one day to find his houseguests, including Mitchell, “had overtaken the bedroom and moved in.” In the ensuing confrontation, Mitchell allegedly beat and strangled the man into unconsciousness.

The man later fled the apartment to a neighbor and contacted police, but Mitchell had fled the scene by the time of their arrival.

Mitchell also had two other warrants out for his arrest, stemming from 2023 allegations of burglary and harassment of an ex.
