WPHS track team breaks records during memorable season
School record fell early and often for the Woodland Park High School track and field team in 2024.
In total, 61 new entries were made into the all-time top 10 WPHS track records this season.
“As a coach, I didn’t want the season to end,” coach Jeremy Grier said. “Our athletes were still crushing personal records all the way up to and at the state track meet. What a fantastic group of kids to work with! I am already excited for next season.”
Twenty-two WPHS athletes qualified for and competed in the State Track and Field Championships, which were held May 16-18. This number sets a new record for the team, surpassing the previous record of 17 athletes qualifying in one year.
At the state meet, the girls medley team — comprising Lillie Hood, Piper Calderwood, Toni Ciccarelli, and Stella Schroeder — broke the school record with a time of 1:54.45. Their performance earned them a ninth-place finish.
Jaedyn Kohn set another school record earlier in the year in the shot put. After finishing as runner-up last year, she claimed the state championship on her final throw, overtaking the competitor in first place. Kohn also won the state championship in discus, repeating her 2023 victory. She concludes her high school career with three gold medals and one silver medal from the state championships.
Caden Howard recovered from a fall in the 300-meter hurdles to finish fifth at state. Aidan Bates secured a ninth-place finish in the triple jump, earning a spot on the podium. The boys 4×800 team finished 10th, narrowly missing the podium, but ran a personal record that ranks fifth all-time in WPHS history.
