A standout Colorado Springs resident could be eligible for a once-in-a-lifetime ride-along with the Blue Angels when the Navy’s flight demonstration team joins the Pikes Peak Regional Airshow in August.

The Blue Angels’ Key Influencer program offers area residents who positively impact local youth the chance to take to the skies in one of their Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornets.

A “key influencer” is defined as a person who helps “shape attitudes and opinions” of young people in their communities, including teachers, coaches, school board members and group leaders, according to airshow officials.

“We’re hoping to get a bunch of nominations from which we can select a handful of awesome people, then give those names to the Blue Angels,” said Colorado Springs Sports Corp. spokeswoman Lauren DeMarco.

Airshow officials will be accepting nominations until May 30, DeMarco said.

Elected officials, freelance reporters and photographers are not eligible for the program, according to the airshow’s website.

The ideal rider must meet certain physical criteria in order to be eligible to fly. Anyone over 6-foot-6 and/or 265 pounds is not eligible. Nominees who are pregnant or have heart trouble will also be disqualified. A physical examination is required within 30 days of the scheduled flight, officials said.

“If you are someone who is involved with area youth, you can even nominate yourself,” DeMarco said.
