A 23-year-old soldier assigned to Fort Carson has died in what officials say was a training accident at the Joint Readiness Training Center in Vernon Parish, Louisiana.

Army 1st Lt. Zachary Galli was an explosive ordinance disposal officer assigned to the 242nd Ordinance Battalion of the 71st Explosive Ordinance Disposal Group. A statement from Fort Carson said that Galli’s death was still under investigation. The cause and circumstances of his death have not yet been released.

Galli was from Williamsburg, Virginia, according to the the release. He had served for one year and nine months and had been awarded the Army Service Ribbon among other distinctions.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the Galli family, the 749th EOD Co., and the greater EOD community,” said Col. Brennan Fitzgerald, commander of the 71st EOD in the statement.
