Updated: Fountain-Fort Carson boys volleyball advances to championship match against Mountain Vista

AURORA – Fountain-Fort Carson beat Littleton Public Schools 25-10, 25-12 23-25, 23-25, 18-16 to advance to Saturday’s 5A boys volleyball state championship match.

The Trojans held a 2-0 match lead against LPS at Overland High School, but dropped the third and fourth to push the game to a fifth set where they eked out the win.

With the victory, Fountain-Fort Carson advanced to its first-ever boys volleyball championship game and will have a rematch against Mountain Vista, which broke the Trojans’ 21-game winning streak in the semifinals.

Aside from track and field, this is the Trojans’ first championship appearance in a sport besides football.

The Trojans played Trinidad in the AA title game in 1988 and lost 42-6.

Saturday morning, Fountain-Fort Carson dropped its semifinals contest to Mountain Vista in straight sets and fell to the playback round of the tournament.

The Trojans entered the semifinals on a 21-game winning streak but lost 19-25, 23-25, 22-25 to the Golden Eagles.

The Trojans last lost in straight sets on April 3, a 3-0 loss to two-time state champions Discovery Canyon.

After that defeat, the Trojans followed with a 3-0 win against Mesa Ridge on April 5, the first of Fountain-Fort Carson’s 21 consecutive wins.
