A couple’s quarrel at a truck stop nearly resulted in a murder. That’s according to the arrest affidavit document for Laura Melissa Coston, 40, of Colorado Springs.

Coston was arrested on May 7 on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder, menacing, possession of a controlled substance and prohibited use of a firearm.

Officers with the Fountain Police Department responded around 7:22 a.m. to a truck stop in the 1100 block of South Santa Fe Avenue in Fountain on reports of shots fired. The responding officer reports that he found a man and a woman in a Chevy Silverado pickup truck.

The man told the responding officer that he and the woman had previously been in a romantic relationship, then broken up, but remained acquaintances. He said the two had gotten into a fight over both of them going into rehab and over an ex-boyfriend.

The man told the officer that he “continued giving her attitude about he previous argument they were in, before Laura pulled out a gun and fired it at him,” according to the arrest affidavit.

Video of the incident was gathered from the truck stop, which officers say shows Coston pulling out a pistol from her purse and firing one shot in the man’s direction in the parking lot, just missing him.

The arrest affidavit says a search of the truck on Coston’s side yielded a purse believed to belong to Coston, which contained the handgun, as well as a white powdery substance that later tested positive for cocaine.

Coston is scheduled for a first appearance hearing on the attempted-murder charge on May 20.
