Airport Road reopens at South Academy, but another closure scheduled; maintenance planned in Fountain
Drivers can now access Airport Road east of South Academy Boulevard as of Friday, after the roadway reopened nearly a week ahead of schedule.
Crews have completed work replacing underground utility lines across South Academy between Platte Avenue and Airport Road. The work was originally expected to be completed May 9.
All traffic movements through the intersection are now open, project officials said in a construction update.
Starting Monday, crews will fully close Pikes Peak Avenue east of South Academy through May 13 to complete intersection improvements and open the intersection fully, according to the email update. Both eastbound and westbound Pikes Peak Avenue will be closed.
Drivers can use East Bijou Street, Murray Boulevard and Airport Road to get around the closure, officials said.
All business entrances will remain open and accessible.
When work on Pikes Peak Avenue is completed, the intersection will be fully open.
Travelers should expect delays and use alternative routes, project officials said.
Crews also continue underground operations on Hancock Expressway and southbound Academy Boulevard. All directions of traffic are down to one lane throughout the intersection.
Traffic on Hancock Expressway has been moved to the north and crews are working under the eastbound lanes to replace an underground water line.
There are no turn restrictions in place at Hancock Expressway and South Academy during this work.
The construction is part of an approximately $62 million, voter-approved Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority project to improve safety, mobility and pedestrian access along portions of South Academy Boulevard.
They are the first major repairs to the corridor since it opened 55 years ago in 1969.
Traffic signal pole maintenance planned in Fountain
On Monday and Tuesday, the Colorado Department of Transportation will conduct maintenance work on traffic signal poles at the intersection of U.S. 85 and Fontaine Boulevard in Fountain.
Crews will remove rust and repaint the traffic signal poles to extend the life of the poles, the agency said in a news release Friday.
Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
Crews will close the right turn lanes on U.S. 85 and Fontaine.
Drivers and area residents should expect traffic delays on the side streets near the intersection, department officials said.
