Army? Navy? Air Force? Marines?

Enough fighting over who’s the best — celebrate all branches of the military this week with a free concert.

The Air Force Academy Band will be performing its annual Armed Forces Day Concert on Monday at the Pikes Peak Center. The performance will highlight the 70th anniversary of the Air Force Academy and feature the Colorado Springs Chorale and the Air Force Academy Cadet Chorale.

The program will include “Hymn to the Fallen” by John Williams from “Saving Private Ryan” in recognition of the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The band also will be performing “Lincoln’s Lamp” by composer Joseph Spaniola, a former member of the Air Force Academy band.

“It really celebrates the dedication of the military member, how important they are to the fabric of this nation and preserving this nation,” said Col. Michael Willen, AFA band commander and conductor.

The performance will end with a “patriotic finish,” Willen said, closing with “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” the “Armed Forces Medley” and, of course, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”

President Harry Truman established Armed Forces Day in 1949 to replace the separate holidays for the different branches of the military.

“Armed Forces Day, for us, it’s really about providing a venue to celebrate the service of all our fellow service members here in the Pikes Peak region,” Willen said.

The holiday is also about support from the local community, Willen said.

“We usually thank the community for all the support that they give us, by just being a great community having events where they celebrate the military and bring in recognition,” he said. “When we deploy people, our families are left behind and having the support of the community is very, very important.”

Ultimately, Willen hopes audience members leave with a greater appreciation of the armed forces. “When they leave the concert hall, hopefully they leave with an elevated spirit,” he said.

“Hopefully they leave with a greater appreciation for what’s good about this nation and how it still is something to treasure and steward throughout the next days, weeks and years to come.”
