A stretch of Pikes Peak Avenue will be closed starting April 18 for a week due to an ongoing road improvement project.

The closure will take affect west of South Academy Boulevard on Thursday evening. The full road closure will remain in effect until April 26.

Detours will divert traffic onto Chelton Road via Airport Road and Bijou Street.

The construction will repave and improve the intersection of Pikes Peak Avenue and South Academy Boulevard. The closure is part of the wider $62 million South Academy Boulevard Improvements Project, which is set to address drainage issues with the aging roadway and installs a multi-use path.

Additionally, on Monday, underground operations on Hancock Expressway at South Academy resumed, reducing directions of traffic to one lane throughout the intersection, according to the city’s project site.

Crews are removing the existing median and will realign Hancock Expressway traffic. No turn restrictions at the intersection will remain in place.

Drivers should expect delays.
