A closure of Barnes Road between Antelope Ridge Drive and Marksheffel Road is scheduled to begin Monday as part of the Marksheffel Road Expansion Project, according to Colorado Springs City Officials.

Beginning on April 22 Barnes Road will be closed for, “major underground utility work,” according to a Wednesday announcement from the city. The closure is anticipated to last through May 6.

Officials said travelers can expect a signed detour directing drivers to Peterson Road, where they’ll either take Stetson Hills Blvd. or North Carefree Circle to avoid the scheduled closure.

According to the city, businesses located on Barnes Road, west of Marksheffel Road, can be accessed from Antelope Ridge Drive amid the work closure.

The closure along Barnes Road is part of the multi-year project to expand a 3-mile stretch of Marksheffel Road in Colorado Springs. The project will enhance safety and reduce congestion along Marksheffel Road between North Carefree Circle and Dublin Boulevard by adding an additional lane in each direction and turn lanes at intersections, according to the project website.

The whole project is estimated to cost between $50 and $60 million dollars and is expected to finish in 2026.

When complete, Marksheffel Road will be two lanes in each direction with a center median, as well as on-street bike lanes or wide shoulders, improved drainage, and new sidewalks and paths, city officials said.
