A Bent County inmate who escaped custody on Thursday was on the run for four days before he was arrested about 100 miles away, law enforcement officials told Gazette news partner KOAA.

Ronald Caillier was taken into custody at a hospital in Raton, N.M., four days after attacking a Bent County deputy while at the Arkansas Valley Regional Hospital in La Junta, officials said.

Caillier had been taken to the La Junta hospital for medical testing, according to Bent County Sheriff Jake Six.

“One deputy that was in the room with him basically was overpowered by Mr. Caillier, she did chase him into the hallway, they had another little altercation,” said Six, who added that the inmate was not handcuffed to a gurney when he escaped.

“Most of the time the deputy sheriffs do handcuff inmates to the gurney and I think we’re just going to make sure that’s happening every time,” said the hospital’s CEO, Andy Flemer.

“(Caillier ran) through our main ER doors, then ran across the helipad and up through the brush behind the hospital and into a neighborhood and disappeared,” said Flemer.

Law enforcement officials believe Caillier outran the deputy and a hospital security officer before stealing a white minivan that had a gun inside. That’s when the La Junta Police Department alerted the community that an “armed and dangerous” inmate was on the loose.
