6 weekend things to do around Colorado Springs and beyond: Women’s Theatre Festival, Colorado Springs Philharmonic and more

THURSDAY-APRIL 21

Get a glimpse into the minds and hearts of Colorado women during the Women’s Theatre Festival at Millibo Art Theatre. Performances feature original short plays, poetry, monologues, movement and dance dreamed up by the ladies and themed around bread and butter. It opens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and runs 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through April 21, 1626 S. Tejon St., $25-$28; 719-465-6321, themat.org.

SATURDAY-SUNDAY

Award-winning guest conductor Earl Lee will take to the podium to lead the Colorado Springs Philharmonic through its latest Masterworks performance. The weekend’s concerts feature Hector Berlioz’s 1830 “Symphonie Fantastique,” about a man so obsessed with a woman he takes an overdose of opium in the wake of the failed relationship. The piece is based on his crush on an Irish woman whom he eventually married, only to divorce years later. The program also features Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s “Danse negre” and guest violinist Stella Chen on Sergei Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Pikes Peak Center, 190 S. Cascade Ave., $31-$91; csphilharmonic.org, axs.com.

FRIDAY

Tribute band Stone Beat Invasion will offer a two-for-one special and pay homage to rock bands The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. You can get your “Satisfaction” and “Gimme Shelter” by the Stones at the same show as “A Hard Day’s Night” and “I am the Walrus” by the boys from Liverpool. The band’s horn section consists of members of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force bands. Showtime is 7 p.m. Friday, Stargazers Theatre, 10 S. Parkside Drive, $20; 719-476-2200, stargazerstheatre.com.

Showtimes are 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Westside Community Center, 1628 W. Bijou St. Tickets are $19-$24; 719-654-3312, funkylittletheater.org.
