It’s been more than a century since Colorado was in the path of totality for a solar eclipse, and it’ll be a couple decades more for Coloradans who want to experience the rare celestial event without leaving home.

The next coast-to-coast total eclipse will take place on August 12, 2045 — and Colorado will be among a handful of states located in the path of totality. 

While a total eclipse will happen in North America in 2044, it will only be visible in about half of Montana and in a small portion of North Dakota.

The 2045 eclipse will be relatively easy for many Americans to see, with its path stretching from the West Coast to the East Coast through parts of California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.

Colorado Springs and Pueblo will be near the center of the path of totality, as will Grand Junction and a large portion of the Central Mountain region.

Denver will be on the edge of the path, but those in the Mile High City will be able to see the total eclipse with a short drive.

This eclipse will be very noteworthy in the Centennial State, as the last total eclipse to pass above the state occurred on June 8, 1918. That eclipse also had a much smaller path of totality compared to the one that will be seen in Colorado in 2045, with a ‘central duration’ of that previous eclipse being about two minutes and 23 seconds.

The 2045 total eclipse, happening during a busy month for summer tourism, is likely bring a ton of people to Colorado.
