McMahon Magic: A look at some of the most notable walk-offs in Rockies history

Rockies Opening Day 2024

DENVER — Ryan McMahon’s walk-off grand slam was only the third in Colorado Rockies franchise history, giving them a 10-7 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in their home opener.

Here are some of the most notable walk-offs in Rockies history:

Ryan McMahon grand slam, April 5, 2024

Friday’s game between the Rockies and Rays turned into a shootout, with Colorado taking its first lead of the game in the sixth inning and the Rays taking the lead back in the ninth.

But one swing of the bat from McMahon, with Colorado trailing 7-6, gave the Rockies their first home win of 2024.

Charlie Blackmon grand slam, Sept. 11, 2020

Aside from McMahon, Charlie Blackmon has the most recent walk-off grand slam in Rockies history. The outfielder, who has played in Colorado since 2011, turned a tie game into an 8-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ryan Spilborghs grand slam, Aug. 24, 2009

Featured Local Savings

Ryan Spilborghs was the first Rockies player to hit a walk-off grand slam. He did so against the San Francisco Giants in 2009, the 15th year of the franchise’s existence.

Spilborghs currently serves as an analyst for Rockies broadcasts on AT&T SportsNet.

Jamey Carroll sacrifice fly, Oct. 1, 2007

The Rockies and the San Diego Padres both played to 89-73 regular-season records, forcing a tiebreaker game. San Diego took a lead in the 13th inning, scoring two runs in the top of the frame.

But Colorado responded well. Jamey Carroll drove in Matt Holliday on a sacrifice fly to send the Rockies to the playoffs, where they’d eventually win the National League pennant.

Dante Bichette home run, April 26, 1995

In the first game ever played at Coors Field, Dante Bichette hit a 14th-inning walk-off home run against the New York Mets. That home run was the Rockies’ first at Coors Field.
