Rockies embrace local roots with Coors Field additions ahead of opening weekend

The Rockies went all-in on their Colorado ties and enlisted the help of a local to bring the same energy to the walls of their new Coors Field Toyota Clubhouse.
Taylor Gallegos, a native Coloradan from Boulder and Colorado State University alum, was brought in to paint his vision of the Rockies — both the mountains, and the baseball team he has rooted for since childhood.
He teamed with Kyle Cooper, the team’s photographer, and started thumbing through Colorado’s art archives that date back to 1993. Each moment, from Todd Helton’s elation after a walk-off home run in the 2007 postseason to Ubaldo Jiménez’s no-hitter, was represented as an accumulation of moments across 30-plus years of baseball in Denver.
Behind the players is a view from the stadium’s seats of Longs Peak and Pikes Peak, accompanied by the team’s 2007 National League Pennant ring atop it all, joined by fans hoisting “Rocktober” signs.

“Each of these is a standout moment that made an impact,” Gallegos said. “Walker (Monfort) knew the archives really well, and we even brought in some of the Rockies’ long-time employees who have been here for 30 years and seen it all.
“We wanted this to tell the story of the Rockies.”
Discussions and planning for the mural began last year before Gallegos was given a fresh canvas outside the newly-renovated Toyota Clubhouse — an area where fans can watch other games, get food, and sit with other club members.
Once he was given the go-ahead, Gallegos spent eight-to-12 hours a day, six days a week for two months designing and painting the mural. In the hallway behind home plate, and before fans reach the Clubhouse, he also hand-painted canvas murals of Ezequiel Tovar, Nolan Jones, Charlie Blackmon, Kris Bryant, Ryan McMahon and Kyle Freeland.

The hallway was previously lined with photos from past memories of the same players, but the new artwork features purple eyes, white walls, and a Rockies theme that fits with the larger mural in the following corridor.
On top of the mural, the Rockies are also partnering with Be A Good Person, a clothing brand started in Denver that works to spread “love, positivity and optimism” through it. The brand also worked with the Denver Broncos years ago, but the new display in center field will be the first part of an expanded display throughout the ballpark of custom-designed Rockies gear.

Proceeds from the brand have been used for charitable donations like nearly $1 million in Make-A-Wish Foundation contributions. Jackets, shirts, and other items will be available at the stand for fans at the home opener on Friday.
Making a quicker, and possibly healthier fan experience
The Rockies have gone virtual at Coors Field, both with tickets and payment methods, and it’s all part of a bigger plan to make concessions and transactions in the ballpark faster.
Chief Customer Officer and Vice President Kevin Kahn stressed that the new pitch clock was a catalyst. Allowing fans to go through new beverage and food stands, like the new Wazee Market down the third-base line and Epic Western Saloon in left field, without having to do more than scan and swipe was a focus.
The same rings true for the team’s ice cream stand in left field. It used to sit where the Epic Western Saloon is now housed and was moved further left near the children’s park. It will feature a full-service sundae stand with contactless payment. And food has been added to the stand as well.
For fans looking at healthier alternatives, the club also enlisted the help of Better-Off Burgers, a new concession stand near section 115. It will feature a menu of only vegan options like a plant-based burger and new protein shakes.
After a taste, it was hard to tell the difference between the plant-based burgers and popular chains like In-N-Out. Future expansions to more stands throughout the park are in the near future, but there will be a solo stand in 2024.
