David Adelman’s time as an assistant could be ending.

Michael Malone’s No. 2 has been granted permission to interview with Charlotte to be the next head coach of the Hornets, according to an ESPN report. Charlotte announced Wednesday that current coach Steve Clifford will move into a front office role at the end of the regular season.

Adelman is in his seventh year as a Nuggets assistant. He’s played an instrumental role in developing Denver’s offense around Nikola Jokic. He previously was an assistant with the Magic and Timberwolves.

Toronto was interested in hiring Adelman last season, and he previously acted as the Nuggets head coach when Malone was away from the team.

Adelman is the son of Rick Adelman, a Hall of Famer who was a head coach in the NBA for 23 seasons. David could soon be following in his father’s footsteps.
