What do most people misunderstand about stand-up? It’s a writing gig, Ben Roy says.

“I worked really hard to watch a lot of comics and then understood that it was a writing job more than a performing job,” the Denver-based comedian said.

Roy, known for appearances on Comedy Central’s “Corporate,” “@midnight” and “This Is Not Happening,” is set to perform at Loonees Comedy Corner this weekend with guest Morgan Gallo. There, the comedian will hit on everything from dating at 44 to being a recent empty-nester.

“I’m definitely talking a lot more about the personal things in my life and more about how I feel, like I talk a lot about letting go of certain things in your life that are holding you down,” Roy said.

“I try to be a lot less ‘finger pointy’ and more looking at how I tend to handle things and look at my life. I think a lot of times when I write I’m kind of speaking to myself.”

Roy started his stand-up career 20 years ago, after being persuaded by a friend to try it. Having grown up as a theater kid, being up on stage wasn’t anything he feared — in fact, he loved it.

“I was used to being on stage, and I’ve played in bands since I was 15 years old. So being on stage was not a new, uncomfortable thing for me,” he said.

Stand-up was never something Roy envisioned as a career, however, always thinking he would play music. And while he still plays in a band occasionally, comedy has become his schtick.

“Stand-up I liked because of the independence of it. I could be creative and then get on stage, but I worked at a pace I set, and I wrote what I wanted to write about,” he said. “It was the freedom to sort of be creatively selfish, which I definitely enjoyed.”

As for his upcoming performance, expect to laugh — but maybe don’t bring the kids.

“They always put me as being super filthy, and I don’t think I’m all that filthy, I don’t think I’m all that R-rated,” Roy said. “I think I was that when I started off, but I don’t think it’s as much anymore, just as I’m changing and writing different things.”
