This concert is for anyone who has always wanted to use the Colorado Springs Philharmonic as their personal jukebox.

It’s a choose your adventure sort of weekend at Pikes Peak Center, where the orchestra will allow random members of the audience to decide the program. “Carmina Burana: Mixtape,” with conductor Thomas Wilson, host Scott R.C. Levy and the Colorado Springs Chorale, is Friday and Saturday.

To prepare for the concert, surveys were sent out asking patrons to make musical suggestions. Works from film classics ranked high on the list, including “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” “The Lord of the Rings” and “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Other classics included Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, the Anvil Chorus, “Ride of the Valkyries,” “O Fortuna” from “Carmina Burana,” “William Tell Overture” and “The Planets.”

“They’ll have to choose between one of those,” Wilson said. “There were also some fun, silly suggestions, like ‘YMCA’ (by Village People). We looked around and came up with an arrangement and if they ask for it we’re going to do it. It would be a first or at least the first in a very long time.”

Altogether, the audience will choose about 11 pieces from 19 selections during each concert.

“That’s a lot,” Wilson said. “It’s tough on us because we prepare more than we play. We have to be more productive in rehearsal.”

Levy imagines his role as host is part award show emcee and part game show host.

“I imagine I’m one of the late night Jimmys hosting an award show,” he said. “It’s a little bit of crowd work, jokes, keep the thing going. A little like Monty Hall on ‘Let’s Make a Deal.’”

During the concerts he’ll either pick a specific person out of the audience or request a full audience vote.

“And who knows, if I see someone I know in the audience they better be prepared,” he said. “I’m pretty sure audience members can come to both shows and see different concerts.”
