Officials release cause of house fire that displaced 6 people in Colorado Springs

The Colorado Springs Fire Department says a heat lamp sparked the fire that engulfed two homes last weekend in the Banning Lewis Ranch neighborhood.

Fire officials said crews on March 24 received a report at 12:30 p.m. of a fire at 6299 Armdale Heights in Colorado Springs.

According to officials, 60 fire personnel responded to the scene with engines from the Falcon Fire Department and a battalion chief from the Black Forest Fire Department arriving to assist.

Officials said a compromised gas line on the properties made it difficult for the firefighters to get the blaze under control until the gas line was shut off. Due to the eventual roof collapse, firefighters deployed two aerial ladders to fight the fire defensively from above the homes.

By 1:27 p.m., the fire was deemed under control. No injuries were reported, but “six people, a cat, a dog, and several chickens were displaced from the two duplexes involved,” fire officials said.

According to the fire department’s Friday announcement, fire investigators determined the cause was accidental, as a heat lamp inside a chicken coop ignited combustibles and spread the blaze to a second home.

“The CSFD wants to remind people that if they have a chicken coop, it is important to secure the heat lamp and keep it inaccessible to animals to reduce the risk of an animal bumping the lamp out of place and starting a fire,” the statement said.
