Theatreworks, Chamber Orchestra to present ‘Into the Woods’ with on-stage musicians
Ever wonder what goes on in the orchestra pit?
A new production of “Into the Woods” will show you, bringing just over a dozen musicians on stage alongside the actors to give a fuller insight into musical theater and celebrating the often behind-the-scenes artists.
Theatreworks, in collaboration with the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs and the Colorado Springs Conservatory, is set to present “Into the Woods” this weekend at the Ent Center for the Arts.
“It’s very, very unique in that way, where we’re celebrating the orchestra members and the actors,” said J. Chang Tablada, the production’s musical director. “We are elevating and uplifting the orchestra.”

The 1987 musical by Stephen Sondheim intertwines the plots of a handful of Brothers Grimm fairy tales, including “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Cinderella,” “Rapunzel” and “Jack and the Beanstalk.”
“It’s a super dynamic story that sort of pulls on the knowledge that almost everyone has of fairy tales,” Tablada said. “It’s this drawing on things that are familiar, but then unpacking the realities of maybe how a fairy tale life actually unfolds.”
The musical provides a challenge for actors, Tablada said, with difficult songs and complex characters. Several actors in the show will be playing multiple roles.
“Stephen Sondheim characters are always in a sense required to be very adept singers, and also powerful storytelling actors to bring the story to life, and this is no exception,” Tablada said.

The entirety of the show’s cast is from Colorado, with backgrounds ranging from opera professionals to trained performers seen at Icons downtown.
“I love that within this concert musical, we have all of these incredibly talented vocalists and actors, but they also come from different backgrounds. So we get to hear these different sounds in the play, and they come together in a really exciting and really full way,” said Theatreworks artistic director Caitlin Lowans.
Expect a performance that will be beautiful “not only for our ears, but for eyes,” Tablada said.
“This is the largest orchestra that I have conducted in a musical theater setting in Colorado Springs,” Tablada said. “It’s just incredible skill and incredible talent.”
