As snow again began to fall on Colorado Springs’ west side and along the interstate corridor Thursday afternoon, skies were overcast but mostly quiet and roads mostly clear at the airport, where plows trolled entry routes, parking lots and runways to keep it that way.
For travelers entering or leaving Colorado Springs Airport via the handful of flights not preemptively canceled — 7 of 34 scheduled for the day were operating on time or with slight delays as of Thursday morning, according to Dana Schield, the airport’s senior communications specialist — it was business, or pleasure, as usual.
Food, beverage and other shops remained open.
A chilly weather welcome for Nicole Fusco, arriving in the Springs early Thursday afternoon from San Diego via Las Vegas, was quickly thawed by a warm embrace from Ashlie Totten, the friend she traveled here to visit.
“We planned the trip months ago and were thinking we’d probably get a hike in — like, a casual almost spring hike — so I’m a little bit surprised to have to deal with snow now, but I’m here for friends, and that’s all that matters … just maybe bundling up a little bit more than we were expecting,” said Fusco.
Fusco was among the minority of travelers in and out of the Springs whose flights weren’t preemptively canceled ahead of what was expected to be the worst winter storm of the season to hit the Front Range.
Another out-of-town friend scheduled to fly in from Ohio, to join the Totten and Fusco’s friend reunion in the Springs, had her flight canceled.
