A man with a handgun made it past security at the El Paso County courthouse due to an error at security Wednesday morning.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said that the man, who was at the courthouse on “official business,” brought the gun through security in a bag. The gun was flagged during screening, but security personnel pulled out a different bag to be searched.

Once the error was discovered, the Sheriff’s Office said the building was searched and the gun and its owner were found “within a matter of minutes.”

The Sheriff’s Office said there was no indication that the man was a threat.

A juror serving on Wednesday who preferred to remain anonymous told The Gazette that the owner of the handgun was serving with him three days into a trial. He said that the man made it to the jury deliberation room before security found him.

Fourth Judicial District Attorney spokesperson Kate Singh confirmed that a judge ordered a mistrial for two joint criminal cases Wednesday with codefendants listed as Khean Caballero and Dante Hamlet, respectively. The cases are now both set for May 6.

Singh said the person involved in the incident was now part of an open investigation that could not be commented on.

The sheriff’s office said the handgun owner was served a summons to appear by the Colorado Springs Police Department.
