Air Force started hot and ended cold on Saturday, as the Falcons lost 3-2 in overtime to American International College in the Atlantic Hockey Association quarterfinals.
The Falcons’ loss is their second to AIC in the last two days, and it ends their season.
Air Force got on the board early in the first period when Austin Schwartz found a puck in a scrum and put it past AIC goalie Nils Wallstrom. The Falcons added to their lead just a few minutes later when Chris Hedden scored.
The teams went scoreless for the entire second period before AIC got hot.
The Yellow Jackets scored just 33 seconds into the third period to cut Air Force’s lead in half. And with 1:31 left in regulation, AIC’s John Lundy scored with an extra skater to send the game to overtime.
The first 12 minutes of overtime were a stalemate before Nico Somerville scored to end the Falcons’ season.
Air Force outshot AIC 40-38, while the Yellow Jackets beat the Falcons 50-42 in faceoffs.
AIC will battle Rochester Institute of Technology in the AHA semifinals.
Air Force finishes the season 18-19-1. The Falcons, who had a first-round bye, entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed.
