A Colorado Springs man’s burglary spree came to an end earlier this week, after he was convicted of 140 criminal counts.

Brandon Kerby, 50, pleaded guilty to the criminal charges in an El Paso County courtroom and was sentenced Tuesday to 34 years in prison. The crimes included burglary, theft, criminal trespass, motor vehicle theft, identity theft, money laundering and additional narcotics-related crimes. According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, Kerby’s actions affected dozens of victims.

According to a Sheriff’s Office press release, beginning in May of 2022, law enforcement agencies in the area noticed a series of residential and business burglaries were reported across the county. Items stolen during these burglaries included identification documents, heirloom quality goods, guns, electronics and home items. The Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado Springs Police Department began investigating. Doorbell surveillance footage along with “continued investigation through various online resources,” eventually helped lead investigators to Kerby as a suspect.

The Sheriff’s Office said it arrested Kerby in September of 2022 on multiple charges. Search warrants served by police and sheriff’s deputies resulted in the recovery of several stolen items at that time.

Kerby posted bail on his original case “and resumed his criminal behavior,” in December 2022. Investigators said that between his release and March 2023 Kerby burglarized businesses and stole more items, including at least one motor vehicle, according to the Sheriff’s Office press release.

In all, investigators said he was responsible for more than $400,000 in thefts, as well as several thousand dollars in property damage.

At the time of his sentencing, the District Attorney’s Office reported that Kerby was responsible for 15% of all burglaries reported in El Paso County.

“As I have promised before, criminals will be held accountable, and we will do our best for the victims of crime and the citizens of this great county,” Sheriff Joseph Roybal stated as part of his department’s press release. “The partnerships and collaboration we have within the community and throughout law enforcement in the Pikes Peak Region are invaluable.”

Kerby has a criminal record reaching back at least 30 years, with prior arrests or convictions in Texas, New Mexico and California.
