A cyberattack shut down the ability for military clinics and hospitals worldwide to dispense medication using its commercial prescription processor.

The outage extends to some TriCare network pharmacies reliant on the same company, Change Healthcare, said Gino Mattorano, spokesman for the Defense Health Network over Colorado military installations.

A national announcement from Tri-Care said the attack targeted Change Healthcare, the nation’s largest commercial prescription processor. To protect patient information, Change Healthcare disconnected their systems on Wednesday. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Change Healthcare said the attack may have come from a nation-state that gained access to its systems. It is working with leading security experts, law enforcement and government agencies on the issue, the company said.

Military clinics and hospitals are expected to provide outpatient prescription through a manual procedure. Urgent prescriptions will have priority, Tri-Care’s announcement said.

Fort Carson Outpatient Pharmacies are seeing delays and in some cases are not able to process prescriptions because of the attack, according to an online announcement.

The online statement said refills can be retrieved from the ScriptCenter or by pulling a ticket at the pharmacy.

Other military hospitals and clinics in Colorado continue to offer pharmacy operations based on their local manning and resources, Mattorano said.

“We are asking all of our beneficiaries to please be patient while pharmacies take longer than usual to safely fill prescription needs,” he said.

If prescriptions are filled by a non-military treatment facility there could be a copay or charge in most cases, he said, in a statement.

Change Healthcare said they expected the issue to last through the day on Friday, on its status update page.

When service is restored, Mattorano said, there could be some delays because pharmacies expect to see an increase in prescription requests.
