Two rock bands latest additions to lineup at Colorado Springs venue

Longtime rock bands Primus and Steve Miller Band are next up in the slowly unfurling summer lineup at Sunset Amphitheater.

Primus will perform Aug. 24 with opening act Fantastic Negrito, a blues, R&B and roots singer songwriter.

Steve Miller Band is slated for Sept. 27.

Tickets for both shows go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday. Call 888-929-7849 or go online to axs.com or sunsetamphitheater.live.

Most popular in the ’90s, Primus got together 40 years ago and dropped their debut studio album, “Frizzle Fry,” in 1990, and their ninth album, “The Desaturating Seven,” in 2017. Hits include “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver,” “My Name is Mud,” “John the Fisherman” and “Too Many Puppies.”

Formed in the ’60s, Steve Miller Band’s popularity blew up late in the decade and into the ’70s. The California band has released 18 albums and is known for a long list of hits, including “The Joker,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like an Eagle” and “Jet Airliner.”

Pop rock band OneRepublic will open the new 8,000-seat, open-air venue on the city’s north side, southeast of Interstate 25 and North Gate Boulevard in the Polaris Pointe development. The Colorado Springs band will play Aug. 9-10. Both shows are sold out.

Concerts by ’60s surf band The Beach Boys, country star Dierks Bentley and Americana duo Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are on sale now. Tickets range in price from $39.95 to $272. The amphitheater will host at least 20 shows this summer. New concerts will be announced weekly over the next month. Next year the venue will offer shows May through September.
