Man who shot and killed dog in Colorado Springs makes first court appearance
A Colorado Springs man accused of shooting and killing a dog last week made his first appearance in court on Friday morning.
Ryan Longo, 34, faces charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and menacing — both felony-level charges — after he allegedly shot and killed a dog on Feb. 5.
According to previous reporting from The Gazette, officials learned the dog named Zoey was being walked at the time by a friend of the owners.
Investigative efforts suggested Zoey had been involved in a previous altercation with another dog weeks earlier.
According to police, it appeared Longo had been plotting revenge since. As soon as the person walking the dog identified her as Zoey, Longo shot the animal multiple times.
Longo was found at his residence and was taken into custody without further incident.
Zoey died as a result of her injuries, according to police spokesperson Caitlin Ford.
During Longo’s court appearance on Friday, he was informed by the prosecution that the terms of his bond no longer allowed him to own an animal, and Longo would have to give up his dog.
Longo appeared in court out of custody after posting a $10,000 surety bond to be released from custody on Feb. 7, according to court records.
Longo will make his next appearance in Colorado’s 4th Judicial District Court on March 1 for an appearance of counsel.
