Colorado Mother Aims to Inspire Conversations about Organ and Tissue Donation on National Donor Day

(BPT) – This month, in recognition of National Donor Day on February 14, Marijean Conci of Centennial, Colo., is honoring her late son Kody’s memory. Conci shares the indelible mark Kody left on those around him simply because he said “yes” to organ, eye, and tissue donation on his 18th birthday.

“Kody was an amazing man with a heart of gold,” remembered Conci. “On his birthday in 2004 we went together to get his ‘adult’ driver license. While we waited, I saw the poster about saying ‘Yes’ to organ donation and I asked if he would be interested in registering to be an organ donor. Kody didn’t hesitate to say yes.”

When Kody unexpectedly passed away 13 years later, his generous decision to register as a donor meant that five other lives could be saved and healed.

“I’ve always been a registered donor, but it never crossed my mind that I would be touched by organ donation firsthand in my lifetime,” said Conci. “While nothing can erase the pain of losing a son, the knowledge that his legacy lives on in the beating hearts and restored health of others is a testament to the enduring power of his compassion and generosity,” expressed Conci.

One person can save up to eight lives through organ donation and save and heal up to 75 lives through tissue donation. Conci says she is lucky to be in contact with Kody’s recipients, including the person who received his heart.

“It does bring some comfort to know that my loss has provided others with a second chance at life, as some would not be here today without it,” said Conci. “What made Kody special was his selflessness in life and even after. I know he would want me to carry on his memory by sharing his story.”

On National Donor Day, Conci invites others to reflect on Kody’s story, consider the impact of a single “Yes,” and embrace the opportunity to give the gift of life through organ, eye, and tissue donation.

How to Make a Difference on National Donor Day

There are nearly 1,300 people awaiting a lifesaving transplant in Colorado and Wyoming alone. You can make a difference simply by saying “Yes” to registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor when obtaining or renewing a driver license or state ID, or anytime at www.DonateLifeColorado.org or www.DonateLifeWyoming.org.

It is also important to discuss your decision with your family. Knowing your decision in advance will make it easier for your family during a very difficult time. Discussing donation with loved ones will help them feel confident and prepared when they are presented with information about the donation process.
