High school sports week features a slew of notable events around Colorado
Here are five notable prep sporting events happening this week.
Events to watch
Girls’ swimming
State swimming and diving
All day Thursday-Saturday at Veterans Aquatics Center, Thornton
State diving began Tuesday and Wednesday along with preliminaries for 4A swimming Wednesday, but the remainder of the week will feature plenty of action from the state’s primer athletes.
Pine Creek, last year’s Class 4A state champions, will fight for a repeat Thursday as finals for Class 4A swimming events begin.
The Eagles enter with five relays or individuals seeded No. 1 in their respective events.
Cheyenne Mountain’s Samantha Synsvoll enters the 200 IM with the top spot and a seed time nearly 4 seconds faster than second place.
The Red-Tailed Hawks also have divers Erica Leveille and Monique Ardines, who enter state as the No. 1 and 2-seeded competitors.
Wrestling (boys and girls)
Regionals
All day Friday-Saturday, various locations
Wrestlers enter the final weeks of competition and will battle for a spot at next week’s state tournament at Ball Arena in Denver.
Area wrestlers will compete as close as The Classical Academy and as far as Grand Junction to secure their spots at the state tournament.
Lewis-Palmer will host Class 4A boys region 3, where 11 of the 14 squads in the bracket are area teams.
The Discovery Canyon girls, which will head to Lamar, have Loveland in their region, but the Thunder are favored to win Region 4.
Boys’ basketball
James Irwin at Vanguard
3 p.m., Saturday at The Vanguard School
The Jaguars head to Vanguard to cap a rugged four-game stretch that included Salida, Lamar and Buena Vista.
Vanguard enters the contest as Class 3A’s No.6-ranked team and have won six in a row with each of those victories coming by double digits.
Both teams boast scoring machines with the Jaguars’ Matthew Lebron at 25.1 points per game. The Coursers have Cameron Rowney, who averages 18.8 points.
Falcon at Harrison
1 p.m., Saturday at Thorpe Gymnasium (Harrison)
Falcon’s stellar season continues as the Falcons hold a 15-4 record and have won 9 of their last 10 games.
Following an 11-year hiatus in games between both teams, the Panthers and Falcons met last season where Harrison earned a 50-45 win.
The Panthers have a challenging road leading up to the game. Harrison will play at Cañon City at 7 p.m. Friday, then face the Falcons at home at 1 p.m.
Girls’ basketball
Rangeview at Colorado Springs Christian School
7 p.m., Thursday at Colorado Springs Christian
Although the Lions earned the Class 3A state title last season, Rangeview broke their 16-game winning streak and handed the Lions their only road loss of the year.
This season, the Class 6A Raiders travel to Colorado Springs where the Lions hope for revenge and to build their unbeaten 2023-24 season and multi-season win streak .
The Lions’ win against Banning Lewis on Tuesday night helped CSCS match their third longest win streak in school history at 21.
With a victory against the Raiders, CSCS will have 22 in a row, which includes six games from last season and is four victories shy of the Lions’ second longest win streak in school history, 26, which the Lions accomplished in 2009.
