Another major migration is bringing 10,000s of birds to Colorado
That field of white you’re soon to see near Lamar, Colorado might not be a layer of fresh powder. If you find yourself in southeast Colorado at the beginning of February, you’ll likely catch a remarkable natural phenomenon known as the high plains snow goose migration.
During this time of the year, tens of thousands of snow geese will flood the skies above parts of the Centennial State for a brief period. While the sight is amazing in itself, what’s perhaps more stunning is the sound produced when thousands of the large birds flap their wings to take off in unison. And don’t get this migration confused with the sandhill crane migration – both happen around the same time, but the best viewing areas are found in different parts of the state.
Spending roughly half of their year migrating, the giant flock of snow geese is moving through the state on the way to their winter roost in warmer areas. This species is quite large, with a wingspan measuring in at 53 to 65 inches.
The best way to catch this spectacle is at the High Plains Snow Goose Festival in Lamar, Colorado. The event takes place this weekend from February 2 to 4, featuring birding experiences, craft shows, and number of other events.
