Exhibit celebrating John Fielder’s photography coming to Denver

Another celebration of John Fielder is coming to downtown Denver.

On Thursday, History Colorado Center will debut an exhibit called “Flow: On the River with John Fielder.” For admirers of the late, storied landscape photographer and conservationist, the Colorado River-themed exhibit will be an introduction to the John Fielder Mezzanine Gallery — a space committed to the lifetime of work Fielder donated to History Colorado’s public domain before his death last year.

Amid his fight against cancer, the donation came after Fielder sifted through hundreds of thousands of pictures he took all around the state over four decades. Now available for personal and commercial use, Fielder said he hoped the work would inspire a deeper appreciation for Colorado and a contemplation of changes caused by man.

The Colorado River was a particular focus of his advocacy work.

“’Flow’ is a remarkable chance to see the breathtaking beauty of the Colorado River system through John’s eyes,” Jason Hanson, chief creative officer and director of interpretation and research at History Colorado, said in a news release.

The exhibit explores colorful canyons and views along some of the Colorado’s legendary tributaries, including the Yampa, Gunnison and Dolores rivers. It’s a journey through large-format prints — “some so big it will feel like you could step right into them,” Hanson said.

The photos will be accompanied by words from Fielder’s publications and interviews over the years. “It only makes sense that we let his words of wisdom guide us as we welcome the John Fielder Mezzanine Gallery to the History Colorado Center,” Hanson said.

“Flow” is the first of what it set to be a five-year run of rotating exhibits dedicated to Fielder.

Access to the gallery is included with the price of admission to History Colorado Center, open daily from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.. Tickets online for $15, free for kids 18 and younger.
