Comedian Amy Miller to headline Colorado Springs comedy club
California-based comedian Amy Miller will headline Loonee’s Comedy Corner this weekend.
Miller has been named an “Up Next” comic by Comedy Central and is running a 30-minute special called “Ham Mouth” on the CC YouTube channel. The show at Loonee’s also will feature Colorado comedian Edward Bell and will be hosted by Russell Keller.
“Loonee’s is super fun, and the staff there is awesome,” Miller said. “They really can just expect some good jokes and a fun time.”
Miller started comedy in a San Francisco laundromat about 12 years ago. From there, she began to love the craft — especially touring.
“I love honestly the travel, which I know people complain about. I love meeting people. I love not having a boss really,” she said.
But what Miller really enjoys is crafting jokes, she said.
“More than anything, stand-up is just like sharing your worldview in a funny way,” she said. “I like the challenge and the fun of putting that to words, basically. Finding punch lines in it, especially a lot of the dark stuff, because life is dark. I just really like the exercise of it.”
During her set, she’ll hit on a range of topics, talking from experiences, she said.
“Like most stand-ups, I talk mainly about myself, and a lot about my family, my relationships. I am by no means a political comedian. So it all just comes from experience,” she said.
“I would say if there’s any theme in my stand-up, which there’s really not, it would be probably just telling stories where I seem at the beginning like I’m gonna be the hero of it, and then I’m not.”
Before heading to see her, however, she recommends previewing some of her set — just so you know what you’re getting into, she joked.
“I always encourage people to research any comedian they see,” she said. “It’s very normal for music fans to kind of like a venue or wander in to take a chance on a band they’ve never heard of.
“But with comedy, it’s a little bit weird, because it is just a person talking for an hour, so it’s like if you don’t like that person, you want to find out before you get there.”
