El Paso County is planning major upgrades to the intersection of Rex and Meridian roads north of Falcon, a fast-growing area of the county.
The $8.5 million project is meant to improve safety and extend drivers’ line of sight, a presentation by El Paso County said.
When drivers are turning from Rex Road to go south on Meridian Road, the hills block the drivers’ views of oncoming traffic. So the county is planning to change the grading of the road to even it out to improve safety, the presentation said.
New traffic lights and turn lanes are also going to go in at the intersection that only has stop signs on Rex Road.
The changes are intended to reduce the delay for those traveling on Rex.
The project is expected to start early this year, and it is expected to be complete in late 2025, the presentation said.
El Paso County Engineer Joshua Palmer said via email that a contractor for the project has been selected, and construction should start in the first three months of the year, although that could be delayed by weather.
The project will be paid for with fees paid by property owners when they receive approval to build new homes and businesses.
Drivers should expect traffic patterns to change during construction, Palmer said.
