The Colorado Springs School on Wednesday announced that Ryan Kelly will take the helm as its new Head of School effective July 1.

Kelly will take over for longtime Colorado College educator Mike Edmonds, who took over interim leadership of the independent day school in September. The Colorado Springs School officials lauded Edmonds’ “exemplary service, fundraising and leadership” as he helped guide the school through its international search process.

“It is an honor to be selected as the next Head of The Colorado Springs School,” Kelly said in a statement. “I look forward to working collaboratively to provide a dynamic, nurturing, and inclusive environment where every student can discover their passions and thrive.”

Kelly brings a wealth of experience to the head of school position, according to a CSS news release. He obtained a master’s degree in science instruction and curriculum at the University of Colorado at Boulder and taught Advanced Placement and honors science and mathematics at charter and public schools before transitioning to administration. He served in a number of leadership positions at day schools in Idaho and Florida before taking on the role of Founding Head of School at BASIS International & Bilingual School in China. 

“Dr. Kelly will be instrumental in advancing our mission to serve the region,” said Heather Kelly (no relation), chair of CSS’s Board of Trustees. “His leadership comes at a time when CSS is embracing impactful changes to fortify our position as a regional asset and an exceptional educational choice for families.”

Edmonds, who stepped into the leadership position after Tambi Tyler announced she was stepping down in June, will continue as interim Head of School for the remainder of the academic year, officials said.
