Colorado Springs Weather: Frigid conditions and dangerous wind chills persist

Weather in the Colorado Springs area is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 13 according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

A south-southeast wind will be present today around 5 mph bringing wind chill values ranging from -10 to 0 degrees.

Snow showers are expected to pick up overnight between 4 and 5 a.m. A wind chill warning will remain in effect until Tuesday morning at 11 a.m.

Wind driven snow will continue along the Continental Divide today before the focus of the heavier snowfall shifts to the higher elevations of Lake and Chaffee counties later this afternoon. Significant additional accumulations are expected.

Very cold arctic air will remain locked in place across the southeast plains today, with temperatures struggling to climb above single digits.  Wind chill readings tonight will drop to as cold as 30 below zero which could cause frost bite in under 30 minutes. Some light flurries will be possible early this morning and again tonight across portions of the southeast plains, with little to no accumulation.

Bitter cold Arctic air will remain in place and be re-enforced late Monday as a cold front moves back into the Plains. Wind chill readings will be dangerously cold Monday night into Tuesday morning, with values in the 20 to 30 below zero range for much of the region. A band of light snow is likely Monday afternoon and night, dropping south from the Palmer Divide, across the Plains, clearing by Tuesday morning. Snow accumulations of an inch or two is possible across the Palmer Divide, and less than an inch for the rest of the Plains. Snow will continue along the Continental Divide Monday and Monday night, with an additional 1 to 4 inches forecast, with the highest amounts north of Cottonwood Pass.

An upper disturbance will track across the area Wednesday into Friday. Snow will once again be possible over the Mountains beginning Wednesday through Friday. Snow will be possible across the Plains Wednesday night into Thursday with minor accumulations possible.

Martin Luther King Day:  A 50 percent chance of snow, mainly after 8am. Mostly cloudy and cold, with a high near 9. Wind chill values between -5 and -15. North wind 10 to 15 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday:  Sunny, with a high near 31. West northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 52. Breezy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph.

Thursday:  A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly sunny, with a high near 45. Northwest wind around 15 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 37. West wind around 10 mph becoming south in the morning.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. West wind around 10 mph becoming south southwest in the morning.
