Colorado dubbed a ‘top growth state’ for movers while California ranks last again

Colorado is a top American growth state in terms of people moving in, according to a report published by U-Haul on Jan. 2.

According to the company’s report, Colorado ranked ninth in terms of one-way customer moves in 2023. While one-way moves to the Centennial State fell by one percent compared to 2022, departures also fell by one percent.

Considering moves that took place elsewhere in the country, this was enough for Colorado to climb from the 11th “growth state” position in 2022 to number nine. This was the third time in four years that the state cracked the top 10 in terms of “growth states” based on U-Haul data.

The top growth city in Colorado, according to U-Haul, was Fort Collins. Loveland, Boulder, Montrose, Parker, Steamboat Springs, Pagosa Springs, Silverthorne, Brighton and Gunnison were also cities that got a notable net-gain of in-bound movers.

The addition of more housing and strong employment were said to be contributing factors to overall growth in Colorado, as well as the outdoor recreation that the state offers and how this makes local life appealing.

U-Haul calculated growth by analyzing the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks, trailers and moving containers in various spots around the country, looking at more than 2.5 million one-way customer transactions in the United States and Canada.

Overall, the top-ranking state in terms of a net gain of movers was Texas, holding on to the same position it held in 2022. Perhaps more interesting is that California ranked 50th for the fourth year in a row, indicating that people continue to move out of this West Coast region.
