Monument calls for citizens to serve on commission to review district rebalancing
The Town of Monument is looking for residents to serve on its temporary Council District Advisory Commission early next year.
The Monument Town Council is looking to appoint two residents to the upcoming Council District Advisory Commission to review the council districts established pursuant to its Home Rule Charter, Section 2.2 and make recommendations whether their boundaries should be changed.
With the passage of the Home Rule Charter in last year’s November election, the municipality was established with two separate districts which require town council representation from each district in future elections. Since there will be an election in 2024, part of the charter requires the district undergo a rebalancing by population prior to six months before the upcoming election, Mayor Pro Tem Steve King said.
“With all the new construction over the last year and new residents, the district rebalancing needs to be addressed,” he said.
Thus, the Town Council is forming a commission to reevaluate the districts to comply with charter requirements and is looking for two citizens to volunteer to serve on it. Qualified candidates must be registered electors of Monument, 18 years of age or older, and a resident of the town at the time of appointment.
Volunteers who are appointed will serve until the Town Council’s adoption of an ordinance approving changes to the Council District boundaries or May 9, 2024, whichever is earlier, unless previously terminated or extended by ordinance.
“This will be a fairly short commitment of time and should be complete within a few months of a few meetings,” King said. “But it’s important, so we ask for your participation.”
Citizens seeking appointment must submit a letter of interest to the town clerk no later than 5 p.m., Dec. 21. In addition, Persons seeking appointment are encouraged to attend the regular meeting of the Town Council Jan. 2, 2024, at town hall where candidates may be interviewed.
