D-38 new directors sworn in, new board roles determined
The new landscape of the School District 38 board is now in place.
The Lewis-Palmer School District Board of Education had a special meeting Dec. 5 at the district learning center in Monument to swear in its newly elected directors and determine the roles of its directors moving forward.
Board president Tiffiney Upchurch swore in the incumbent directors Kris Norris (Dist. 1) and Ron Schwarz (Dist. 4). Thereafter, the new faces elected to serve on the board, Dr. Patti Shank (Dist. 2) and Todd Brown (Dist. 5), were also sworn in by Upchurch.
In accordance with Colorado State Statutes, the board then made nominations for electing directors to serve in the roles of the board. Tiffany Upchurch was nominated and elected to continue serving as board president. No other nominations for the role were made.
Norris was nominated and elected to the role of board vice-president, succeeding former director and vice-president Theresa Phillips. Again, no other nominations were made for the role.
Shank was voted into the role of the board secretary, and Schwarz was elected to continue to serve as the board treasurer. Brown will serve as the board’s director at large.
“I want to make sure that we as a board are working on a process of successful succession,” Upchurch, who has two years remaining in her election term, said. “We’ve got some excellent board members. Any of us could have served in this position. They’re just titles. Each and every one of us has an equal voice and has an equal leadership role on this board. No one board member speaks on behalf of the entire board.
“I look forward to, as we continue to develop and grow, see other board members move into other positions in the future.”
Also in accordance with statute, D-38 Chief Business Officer Brett Ridgway was appointed to remain the assistant treasurer to the board, while Vicki Wood was re-appointed to serve as assistant secretary to the board.
All board members then read and signed affidavits stating each board member is aware of and will comply with the confidentiality requirements and restrictions applicable to the board’s executive sessions, in accordance with state legislation.
