Cheyenne Mountain Zoo affected by power outage Friday night; Electric Safari running as scheduled Saturday
The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s power is fully restored following a brief power outage in the Broadmoor area Friday night.
According to zoo spokesperson Rachel Wright, the zoo lost power around 10 p.m. Friday.
“Our automatic backup generators that heat vital animal areas started immediately as planned,” Wright said, adding the response plan at the zoo is extensive, and practiced regularly.
“(The response) includes a team of staff who come to the Zoo to confirm automatic generators are powering heat sources in animal areas, and all were working as planned.”
“The team manually powers additional generators and heaters if needed.”
Wright said once the animals are taken care of, the response team works with Colorado Springs Utilities to restore power throughout the rest of the zoo, including its bathrooms, restaurants and office areas.
According to zoo officials, the power was fully restored around 2 a.m. Saturday. It is unclear what caused the power outage at this time.
According to Wright, the power outage has not affected business Saturday, with the zoo open for daily admission, and the Electric Safari holiday event to run Saturday evening as regularly scheduled.
The Utilities’ power outage map indicated around 100 customers were affected Friday night.
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s Electric Safari is an annual tradition.
