Accused Colorado Springs courthouse shooter makes first appearance, more charges may be filed
The man accused of killing one person outside the El Paso County courthouse earlier this month made his first appearance Monday.
Shaquille Brown, 29, was arrested outside the courthouse when he allegedly shot and killed 28-year-old William Winters.
In an arrest affidavit obtained by The Gazette, Brown told police that he shot and killed Winters because earlier this year Winters allegedly assaulted Brown at a bar in downtown Colorado Springs causing injuries that he said required surgery.
A witness is mentioned in the affidavit who said they saw Brown shoot Winters, yell “I told you I was going to get you,” and then proceed to fire more gunshots at the victim as he was lying on the ground. Winters sustained at least six gunshot wounds, two to the head and four to the body, according to the affidavit.
The courtroom was at near-maximum capacity at Brown’s first appearance, with numerous friends and family of Winters’ appearing to show their support.
The court confirmed that Brown currently faces a one-charge complaint of first-degree murder, but prosecutor Sharon Flaherty stated that she “anticipates” additional charges may be filed against Brown in the future.
Judge Jill Brady also confirmed that Brown has two open post-conviction cases, one for misdemeanor harassment and the other for misdemeanor menacing. Brady said that Brown’s two misdemeanor cases will trail the first-degree murder case.
Two court appearances were scheduled for Brown at the end of the Monday morning hearing, a motions hearing on Dec. 4 and a preliminary hearing to take place on Jan. 4.
Michael Stuzynski, Brown’s attorney, requested to hold bond argument until the preliminary hearing. The friends and family of Winters could be heard expressing their anger with the possibility of a bond reduction when argument was waived by Stuzynski.
Brown is currently being held at the El Paso County jail on a $1 million bond.
Brown has an extensive criminal history in El Paso County dating from 2014, according to court records. He is currently booked into the El Paso County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, child abuse and weapon possession by a previous offender. His first court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 27.
