Russell Wilson says he’s ‘ready to roll’ vs. Jaguars in London
The Denver Gazette’s Paul Klee and George Stoia check in from the Broncos’ practice in London with a Russell Wilson update – straight from the quarterback himself
LONDON — During the Broncos’ over eight-hour flight to London, Russell Wilson didn’t spend much time in his seat.
Instead, the Broncos quarterback was watching film, doing high knees, stretching and treatment on his hamstring in the aisles, in hopes of playing this Sunday versus the Jaguars after missing last week’s game.
“I don’t really get jet lagged too often,” Wilson said with a smile. “Everybody was knocked out, I was doing high knees and working on my legs and everything else, making sure I’m ready to rock.”
He certainly sounded “ready to rock” on Wednesday at Harrow High School in London — the alma mater of former United Kingdom Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
Wilson was a limited participant in practice but participated in a “quite a bit” of Denver’s practice, according to coach Nathaniel Hackett.
“I feel great. Ready to roll,” Wilson said Wednesday. “Super locked in and ready to hopefully get a big win in London.”
Hackett, though, didn’t commit to Wilson playing but is optimistic.
“He’s trending in the right way,” Hackett said.
Last week against the Jets, Hackett played a major role in Wilson not playing. Hackett wanted to rest Wilson, knowing he wouldn’t be fully healthy and knowing Wilson could further injure his hamstring. Hackett opted to start Brett Rypien who totaled 225 yards and one interception in the loss.
But Wilson said he felt like he could play, and feels the same way this week. He’s now only missed four games in his career due to injury — three last season in Seattle with a finger injury and the one game this season.
“I was ready to roll. I’ve played with a lot (of injuries) in my career,” Wilson said. “I’ve played 150-plus games, whatever it was until this dang finger I had. I think any time you’re not out there — I take it serious. I always want to be on the field. I think obviously it was tough not being out there. I want to help us win, get on a hot streak, get on a roll. I think this team can do that.”
Sitting at 2-5, Wilson and the Broncos have little time to turn the season around, making Sunday’s game an important one. But while that may be true, Wilson said the Broncos’ record has little to do with him coming back from injury.
He just wants to play. And he’s willing to do anything to be on the field at Wembley Stadium Sunday, including a workout on the plane.
“It doesn’t matter the record,” Wilson said. “I always want to be out there with my teammates. That didn’t have a factor. I just love being out there and competing with the guys.”
