Sandstorm leaves 7 dead in Utah interstate pileup
At least seven people were killed, and several others were injured after a sandstorm blinded Utah drivers, causing a massive pileup over the weekend.
High winds caused the sandstorm that impaired visibility in Millard County around 4:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, the Utah Highway Patrol said in an update.
“At least 20 vehicles” were involved in the pileup that took place between Salt Lake City and St. George, the department said.

“No one could see, so people started stopping, and then you just get a chain reaction,” trooper Andrew Battenfield, a spokesman for the Highway Patrol, said late Sunday night, according to the New York Times. “Nobody could see, and then all of a sudden, you’re slamming into a car.”
“It’s just a horrific situation,” he added.
Officials did not identify the names of any of the deceased, nor did they identify how many people were hospitalized, though they said the latter number was “several.”
“We don’t even know how many for sure were hospitalized. This is how big of a crash it was,” Battenfield said. “A lot of them are in critical condition.”

Shortly before the pileup happened, the local National Weather Service office noted that dust and dirt were “being kicked up from a strong thunderstorm near Parowan.”
